Abeka Homowo 2026 Will Not Be Celebrated — Official Notice from the Nii Boi Royal Family
The Nii Boi Royal Family of Abeka formally announces that the Abeka Homowo festival will not be held in 2026, following the passing of the Stool Father and Regent Chief, Nii Aban Boi I, on 8th July 2025. The public is warned against individuals soliciting contributions in the family's name.
The Nii Boi Royal Family of Abeka — through the office of the Dzaasetse and Acting Head of Family, Nii Apiakai Boi I — has formally notified the public and relevant authorities that the Abeka Homowo festival will not be celebrated in 2026.
The decision follows the passing of the Abeka Stool Father and Regent Chief, Nii Aban Boi I, on 8th July, 2025. By Ga custom, the Stool Father is no ordinary person — he is the custodian of the Abeka Stool, and his passing calls for the due observance of customary mourning rites before any festival may properly be held. Without a duly recognised occupant of the stool, there is presently no lawful traditional authority to sanction, preside over, or authorise the celebration of the festival this year.
Beyond this vacancy, there are other unresolved matters touching on the stool and its affairs. In particular, Suit No. GTC/JC1/23 — Nii Boi IV vrs Nii Aban Boi I (Abeka Seitse) and 17 Others — remains pending before the Judicial Committee of the Ga Traditional Council. The family submits that it would be improper, and indeed premature, for the festival to be held while this and other matters remain outstanding. The family has already petitioned the Ghana Police Service, Tesano District Police Command, on 24th July, 2026, against the celebration of the festival.
Warning to the Public
It has come to the family's attention that certain persons have been going round the Abeka community soliciting contributions from the public by envelope, purportedly towards Homowo 2026 celebrations. The family states plainly: no such person has any authority whatsoever from the Nii Boi Royal Family to collect any such contribution. Members of the public who have not yet made any payment to these persons are strongly advised not to do so.
Official Notice to Media and Public Institutions
Official letters of notice, dated 6th August, 2026, were formally dispatched to Peace FM (Despite Media Group), Angel FM/TV, Homebase TV, and NDC Okaikwei Central Constituency, requesting their assistance in bringing this notice to the attention of the general public — particularly the residents of Abeka and its environs. A separate petition has also been submitted to the Ga Traditional Council, respectfully requesting the Council's intervention and its own petition to the Ghana Police Service to prevent any unauthorised celebration.
Houses and Gates in Agreement
The following four Houses and Gates of the Nii Boi Royal Family have unanimously agreed that the Abeka Homowo festival should not be held this year:
- Confort Naa Yarley Boi — Head of the Naa Korkor Adai House/Gate
- Ernest Yartey Boi — Head of the Mary Akweley Annan House/Gate
- Winchester Yartey Boi — Head of the Rebecca Ayele Kwei House/Gate
- Patrick Nii Oti Ankrah — Head of the Elizabeth Naa Shɔmee Nortey House/Gate
The Esther Otua House/Gate did not submit a representative despite multiple opportunities being extended to them to participate in the family's decision-making process.
The family further assures the public that a separate and formal notification regarding the finalised burial arrangements for the late Stool Father will be issued in due course.
